- Information
There was no officially defined period of education in mullahkhanas. Most often it lasted 6–7 years, and sometimes up to 9–10 years. Such schools were considered primary madrasahs. Schools in Sheki and Urud of the Garakilseh (Sisian) region, and Kurud village of the Qafan region were considered primary madrasahs. Akhund Abdurrahman Haji oglu, who graduated from the Tehran Higher Madrasah, taught in the mullahkhana in the Kurud village. The nine-year madrasah-type mullahkhana in the Urud village was more progressive and, in addition to providing religious education, also taught secular sciences. In Western Azerbaijan, such schools were mostly organized by local benefactors, so they were free. The madrasah, located in the center of the village and having 6 classrooms, was built by benefactors of the village.
The toponym is formed from the combination of the word "ur", which means "mountain, hill" in Turkish, and the suffix "-ud", which in Turkic languages constitutes a place, and means "mountainous, hilly, village built on the ground."
