- Information
Among the scientists who came to Amasiya from Azerbaijan in the XIX century, there are two great personalities. One of them is Ismayil Afandi from Shirvan, the other is Hamza Nigari from Karabakh. Together with them and later, many Azerbaijani disciples came and settled in Amasiya. Born in Kurdamir village of Shamakhi Khanate in 1783, Sheikh Ismayil Sirajaddin Shirvani completed his education in Shamakhi, Arzinjan, Tokat, Burdur and Baghdad madrasas, then returned to his homeland and taught science here for seven years. Realizing that there is a truth behind science, Ismayil Shirvani set out again and went to Baghdad with the desire to find a perfect murshid, where he became a disciple of Maulana Khalid Baghdadi. In 1817, Ismayil Shirvani, who came back to his hometown Kurdamir with the permission of his murshid, worked in alone there until he was expelled from Azerbaijan under the pressure of the Russian administration. In 1826, he first moved to Akhiska. After the occupation of Akhiska by the Russians, he went to Anatolia and came under the protection of the Ottoman state. Ismayil Shirvani, who settled in Amasiya in 1841, worked here until his death. Ismayil Shirvani's son Shirvanizade Mehmet Rushdi Pasha became the Prime minister of the Ottoman state, and his other son Ahmed Hulusi Afandi became the governor of Istanbul. Ismayil Shirvani died of cholera in 1848 and was buried in Shamlar cemetery near Amasiya. In 1869, Shirvanizade Mehmet Rushdi Pasha, who was the Minister of Internal Affairs, built a tomb and a mosque on his father's grave. The mosque was more crowded on the days of funerals and mourning ceremonies and on religious holidays.
The Islamic monument Sheikh Ismayil Sirajaddin Shirvani Mosque, located in Amasiya, shows that the area is an ancient homeland.
