The toponym is based on the Cimmerian word sak. Sheki is a phonetic variant of the ethnonym “sak // saka”. It is written that Sahl ibn Sumbat was the ruler of Sheki during the Albanian period. G. Geybullayev shows that the Turkic ethnonym saka also exists in the form of “shaka”. It is an ethnotoponym. It is a simple toponym in structure.
